Free Potassium Iodide Distribution: Does Your State Offer KI?

The NRC requires states with nuclear power plants to have KI distribution plans for populations within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ). If you live near a nuclear plant, you may be eligible for free potassium iodide from your state or county health department.

How to Check If You're in an EPZ

  1. Visit the NRC's Nuclear Power Plant Map
  2. Locate the nearest plant to your address
  3. If you're within approximately 10 miles, you're in the EPZ
  4. Contact your county health department or emergency management office

What Products Are Distributed?

State programs typically distribute FDA-approved products: iOSAT 130mg and ThyroSafe 65mg. Distribution quantities are typically limited to one 14-day supply per household member.

Why You Might Want Additional Supply

State-provided KI covers the minimum recommended period. For extended emergencies, or if you live just outside the EPZ but want protection, purchasing your own supply through our buying guide ensures you have enough for your family's needs.
