How to Prepare KI Solution for Children
If liquid KI (ThyroShield oral solution) is unavailable, the FDA provides a method for preparing a liquid solution from tablets. This is essential for dosing children and infants who cannot swallow tablets.
What You Need
- KI tablets (130mg or 65mg)
- Small bowl or cup
- Spoon for crushing
- Measuring teaspoon
- Water (4 teaspoons / 20 mL)
- Flavored liquid for taste masking (4 teaspoons / 20 mL)
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Place one 130mg tablet (or two 65mg tablets) into a small bowl
- Add 4 teaspoons (20 mL) of water
- Wait 2-3 minutes for the tablet to soften
- Crush the tablet completely with a spoon and stir until dissolved
- Add 4 teaspoons (20 mL) of a flavored drink (raspberry syrup works best)
- Mix thoroughly — the total volume is now 8 teaspoons (40 mL)
- Each teaspoon of the resulting mixture contains approximately 16mg of KI
Dosing from Prepared Solution
| Age Group | Dose Needed | Teaspoons of Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Children 3-12 | 65 mg | 4 teaspoons |
| Children 1mo-3yr | 32 mg | 2 teaspoons |
| Neonates | 16 mg | 1 teaspoon |
Best Taste-Masking Agents
Raspberry syrup and chocolate milk are the most effective at masking KI's bitter taste (FDA-tested, >97% stability over 7 days). Orange juice is good. Flat cola is acceptable. Infant formula maintains stability but provides minimal taste masking.
Storage
The prepared solution can be stored covered at room temperature for up to 7 days. Refrigeration is not required but is acceptable. After 7 days, prepare a fresh solution.
