How to Store Potassium Iodide for Maximum Shelf Life
Proper storage ensures your KI tablets remain effective for their full shelf life — and likely well beyond. Potassium iodide is inherently stable, but environmental factors can accelerate degradation.
Optimal Conditions
- Temperature: 59–86°F (15–30°C) — standard room temperature
- Humidity: Low — avoid moisture-prone areas
- Light: Protect from direct sunlight and UV exposure
- Packaging: Keep in original sealed packaging until needed
Best Storage Locations
- ✅ Bedroom closet (dark, dry, stable temperature)
- ✅ Dedicated emergency supplies shelf
- ✅ Nightstand drawer (for quick access)
- ❌ Bathroom (humidity from showers)
- ❌ Garage (temperature extremes)
- ❌ Vehicle glove compartment long-term (heat cycles) — OK for iOSAT travel pack short-term
- ❌ Kitchen near stove (heat and humidity)
Know When to Replace
Signs of potential degradation: visible yellowing or discoloration, moisture or condensation inside packaging, tablets crumbling or powdering, tablet fails to dissolve in water within 5 minutes. Even potentially degraded tablets may still be effective — crush and dissolve rather than discarding.
Rotation Strategy
Mark your purchase date on the packaging. Set a calendar reminder 6 months before expiration to reorder. Donate or use old stock for awareness training. New stock should have the latest expiration date available.
